SPED 371 - Teaching Students with Low Incidence Disabilities

This course provides an overview of the low incidence (LI) disabilities as defined by federal and state laws and regulations. Focus is on the forms of support students with low incidence disabilities need for learning, as well as components of appropriate curriculum for students with LI disabilities, instruction, and technology to support the inclusion of students in all grades (Pre K-12) in a variety of home, school and community settings. Candidates will learn how to plan for and conduct authentic assessment of student learning for students with LI disabilities. Students will gain a broad understanding of students with LI disabilities and how the New York Learning Standards are addressed for students in this population. This course will include 12.5 hours of practicum in an early childhood special education placement. Candidates will receive a letter grade and must receive a C- or higher to move to Block IV.  Candidates will be allowed one retake of this course due to failure or withdrawal.

Prerequisite(s): SPED 224  and SPED 231  and INTD 203  
Corequisite(s): SPED 370  and CURR 213
