Course Description: Language is a critical tool in medical systems and shapes human experiences of health in profound ways. This course introduces students to health-focused research that explores how language impacts care, public health efforts, communities, and patient outcomes. Course themes include: clinical interaction, medical interpretation, public health messaging, biocommunicability, and illness narratives. Readings feature scholarship from multiple countries across the Americas, Asia, and Africa. The project for the course supports students in researching a case study on a language-and-health topic of their own choosing.
