Credit(s): 3 Lecture: 3 Non-Lecture: 0 This course will survey Russian history from the Kiev period through the reign of Peter the Great. Topics studied will include: the issue of nationality, the development and impact of Russian Orthodoxy, the Mongol period, the rise of Muscovy, the institutions of serfdom and autocracy, the question of Westernization, and other social, economic, and political issues. A main focus of the course will be the reading of primary sources.
