A survey of Latin American history from its pre-conquest indigenous and Iberian origins to the collapse of the Spanish Empire and the emergence of national states. Primary emphasis is placed upon the Spanish doctrines of conquest and colonization, the development and influence of the colonial system, and the independence movements.
