Program Learning Outcomes

Students will:

1. Demonstrate the Ability to Find, Validate and understand the source of Data.

2. Understand Global challenges and process that formed major artistic movements.

3. Demonstrate the Basic Written and Oral Communication (GLOBE).

4. Demonstrate Knowledge and ability to select Methodological Approaches.

7. Demonstrate Argument Development.

8. Recognize and analyze nuance and complexity of meaning through critical reflections on text, visual images, or artifacts.

9. Understand systems of value and meaning as embodied in one or more different cultures outside of the Western tradition.

10. Assess interconnections among/across local and global systems and cultures.

11. Understand that role of creative expression, art, and invention as foundational to culture and inclusive societal betterment.

12. Understand the relationship between individual creative work or innovation and wider contexts.

13. Describe the historical and contemporary factors that shape the development of individual and group identity involving race, class, and gender.

14. Analyze the role that complex networks of social structures and systems play in the creation of and perpetuation of power, privilege, oppression, and opportunity.

15. Apply the principles of rights, access, equity, and autonomous participation to past, present, or future social justice action.

General Education Requirements (30-40 Credits)

Prerequisite coursework may be required to satisfy certain General Education courses and will count as elective credit.

Total Credits Required to Complete Major: (39 Credits)

Departmental Notes:

* Students may transfer up to two three-credit courses into Geneseo and still complete the major with 10 courses.

A maximum of 4 credits of ARTH 499  Directed Study and 4 credits of ARTH 495  Internship may be used to satisfy the 400 level requirement.

Recommendations for different career paths:

• For those considering Museum Studies careers: ARTH 378  and ARTH 495  are recommended.  
• For those considering going to graduate school for art history related disciplines: ARTH 399 , ARTH 402 , ARTH 410  and ARTH 484  are recommended.
• For those who are interested in careers in the law and auctioneering: ARTH 378 , ARTH 399  and ARTH 495  are recommended.

Minimum Competence Requirement

A grade of C- or better is required for all Art History and cognate area courses used to fulfill major requirements.

Department Writing Requirement

The department writing requirement is fulfilled through the successful completion of ARTH 487 , which requires a 20-25 page research paper.

Concentration in Art History

A liberal arts concentration in Art History, available to majors in Early Childhood and Childhood, Childhood and Childhood with Special Education.
