The Bachelor of Arts degree in Black and Africana Studies is designed for students who want to take an interdisciplinary approach to their education. Drawing from history, literature, the arts, the humanities, and social sciences, we explore the rich complexities of Africans and African diaspora peoples to promote equity, inclusion, and belonging.

Program Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate an understanding of the rich complexities of social, political, economic, environmental, and cultural life among African and a variety of African diaspora peoples, past and present.
- Demonstrate the ability to identify and critically assess different disciplinary, methodological, and interpretive approaches to the study of Africans, African Americans, and other people of the African diaspora.
- Be able to analyze and compare different kinds of texts, artifacts, or artistic productions, such as historical documents, literary texts, films, museum exhibits, monuments, performances, visual art, electronic media, etc.
- Communicate ideas well in written and oral form, appropriate for an academic setting, including proper citation and revision skills.

Students must complete 18 credits at the 300 or 400 level. Students can apply upper-division methodology courses, electives, experiential learning, and the capstone to meet this requirement.
- Minimum competency of C- for fulfillment of major requirements.
Department Writing Requirement
Successful completion of BLKS 490 fulfills the writing requirement.
