PLSC 326 - Government and Politics of South America Credit(s): 3 Lecture: 3 Non-Lecture: 0 This course introduces students to the comparative political study of South America as well as the political development, political institutions, political economy, and political culture in several South American states. The course explores broad themes that are characteristic of the region’s politics such as authoritarianism, economic development and underdevelopment, political institutions, the impact and role of the United States, armed conflict, and democratization. The course examines why democracy struggled to take root in South America until the late twentieth century and how democracy across the continent reflect the types of democratic transitions each state underwent. The course also examines individual Offered Once every 2 or 3 semesters based upon demand.
Prerequisite(s): PLSC 120 .
