ANTH 313 - Global Health Issues Credit(s): 3 Lecture: 3 Non-Lecture: 0 This course examines the effects of globalization on the health of people around the globe and relates disparities in the spread of preventable diseases and access to basic health services to the growing inequality between rich and poor nations. Some of the issues explored include the repercussions of the HIV/AIDS pandemic; the emergence and impact of new illnesses; the feminization of poverty and its impact on the health of children; and the effects of political repression and violence. The theoretical perspective used to analyze these issues draws on the work of applied and public anthropologists as well as the literature on globalization, public health, race, ethnic and gender politics.
