This course takes an anthropological approach to the study of Latin America and the Caribbean, with a focus on Latin Americans of African descent. It briefly  examines conquest, colonialism, and slavery, before taking an in-depth ethnographic approach to study contemporary regional themes and issues, such as: race, racism and identity, gender, ethnicity, multiculturalism, indigenous social movements, human rights, globalization, tourism, urbanization, religion, health and coping with illness, popular culture, and food.
