This course, the first part of a two-semester survey of European history, focuses on the political, socio-economic, intellectual, and religious history of the Ancient Near East, Greece, Rome, the Medieval World, the Renaissance, and the Reformation which provide the roots for the contemporary Western civilization. Proper analysis of primary sources is stressed, and student participation is encouraged.
