HIST 453 - Nationalism and Ethnic Violence 2020-2021 Catalog Year
Credit(s): 4 Lecture: 4 Non-Lecture: 0 This course considers violence among ethnic communities in the era of the nation-state. The readings cover the theoretical development of ethnicity and nationalism as well as particular manifestations of ethnically-motivated violence ranging from isolated murders to genocide. Topics covered in class include blood libel murders, the Armenian Genocide, the Holocaust, and the Bosnian War massacres. The course emphasizes European and Russian history, but it also considers nationalism and ethnic violence through a global lens by introducing comparisons to other modern cases of ethnic violence.
